Type: Part time (for 1 year)

About SEIRN:

The mission of the Southeast Immigrant Rights Network (SEIRN) is to lift up the voice and the leadership of immigrant communities of the Southeast at the regional and national levels. We promote collaboration and exchange between our members, as well as political education and collective action to build just and inclusive communities.

SEIRN envisions a shared struggle between the immigrant community and other marginalized communities to build a movement that transforms the Southeast into a place that respects the dignity and the human rights of all.

SEIRN currently has three full time staff based in Atlanta, Carrboro and Raleigh.  SEIRN does not have a physical office at this time.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a half-time staff member to join the SEIRN team as the North Carolina Community Organizer. As the NC Organizer you will organize, support and empower immigrants to stop/slow police-ICE collaboration and help strengthen a vibrant movement for immigrant justice centered on the leadership of directly impacted communities. You will coordinate collaborative work with partner organizations focused on stopping/slowing police-ICE collaboration. Additionally, you will support efforts to increase the engagement of community members/leaders and grassroots groups with the legislative and policymaking process.   

As a Community Organizer with SEIRN, you will be responsible for coordinating collaborative efforts, base-building, and leadership development. The work requires extensive collaboration with SEIRN staff, partner organizations, and allies. This position is supervised by SEIRN’s Co-Director based in North Carolina.

The ideal candidate is a passionate, skilled and creative organizer; ready to travel around the state; a self-starter and great team player with a long-term commitment to the immigrant and larger social justice movement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and identify popular education tools and materials

  • Organize trainings to build capacity among existing grassroots groups and support new/emerging leadership

  • Organize and help organize community events (protests, rallies, consultas populares, know your rights trainings, etc.)   

  • Support grassroots leadership development and work with grassroots leaders to support/develop Comités Populares (grassroots-led local groups)

  • Convene and facilitate meetings with partner organizations to develop strategies and actions.

  • Support partner organizations/groups in their efforts to organize community meetings, forums, town hall meetings, actions, etc.

  • Help community members/leaders to engage with legislators and other policy makers

  • Organize, plan and help facilitate meetings and strategy sessions

  • Good understanding of the issues and policies that affect immigrants, especially in North Carolina.

  • Commitment to bottom-up social change and grassroots leadership.  

  • 1- 2 years of community organizing experience

  • Experience building strong relationships with directly impacted immigrant communities and leaders

  • Experience facilitating meetings

  • Fluent in Spanish and English

  • Comprehensive knowledge of social media; experience using database software

  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, 
community leaders, partner organizations, allies, volunteers, and other supporters

  • Willingness to drive and travel around the state and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

  • Have reliable access to a computer, phone and Internet

  • Hard worker, self-starter, well-organized and detail oriented

  • Ability to manage deadlines, work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously; creative thinking and problem solving skills

  • Ability to work  remotely with a team that is geographically dispersed.

 

Salary based on experience and qualifications.  Health insurance, paid vacation and other paid leave provided.
